Captain Sid Hynes
Sid Hynes went to sea as an assistant steward with Marine Atlantic when he first graduated from high school. At 21, he was captain of his first ship. Later, he started Canship Limited, a company that partnered to form Canship Ugland, which operates the largest Canadian based fleet of deadweight tonnage. He has overseen construction, maintenance and operations of large tankers, passenger ferries and other vessels, some valued at over $200 million. Captain Hynes has served as Acting President/CEO of Marine Atlantic Inc and, most recently, he formed a partnership to purchase Oceanex Income Trust, a deal valued at $230 million. With more than 350 employees, Oceanex provides intermodal transportation services throughout eastern Canada and carries approximately half of all freight to Newfoundland.
Captain Hynes is currently Chairman of the Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University’s Industry Advisory Board; Director on the Board of Deer Lake Oil & Gas Limited; and Director of Shipinu Marine Services, Inc. In 2010, he was appointed Honorary Captain (Navy) by the Department of National Defense, awarded “Medal of Merit” by the Association of Canadian Port Authorities and once again, named one of Atlantic Canada’s top 50 CEO’s.
Captain Hynes supports many local charities and non-profit organizations including the Health Care Foundation and the Canadian Red Cross.
