Daniel E. Williams

Born in St. John’s, Daniel E. (Danny) Williams was the eldest of four children of Thomas and Teresita (Galway) Williams. A Rhodes Scholar, Mr. Williams received Arts in Law degree from Oxford University in England, and a Bachelor of Law from Dalhousie University in Halifax. He is a founding partner of the firm Williams, Roebothan, McKay and Marshall which has become the largest personal injury practice in the province. While still in his early twenties, Mr. Williams successfully led a consortium of business people seeking Newfoundland and Labrador’s first cable television license and guided Avalon Cablevision (later Cable Atlantic) through significant growth and diversification.

A hockey player and coach, Mr. Williams was the founder and president of the St. John’s Junior Hockey League and was instrumental in establishing the St. John’s Maple Leafs AHL team to St. John’s. He is also a member of the Board of Governors for the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame. Mr. Williams was named Canadian Cable Caster of the Year for 1990 by CableCaster Magazine, was named to the Canadian Cable Television Honors List in 1992, Memorial University’s Financial Executive of the Year in 1992, Gonzaga High School’s Alumnus of the Year in 1994 and Memorial University’s Entrepreneur of the Year in 1998.

In more recent years, Mr. Williams has turned his attention to public life, becoming Leader of the Progressive Conservative Party of Newfoundland and Labrador in 2001 and MHA for Humber West. A devoted family man, he is married to Maureen (Power) and has four children: Jillian (Trevor Morris), Daniel, Jane and Katie. He has two grandchildren, Abigayle and Gabriel.
